17th Pct on East Side Gets New Commanding Officer as Former CO Heads to Mid-Town South

At least a half dozen new commanding officers have been named in Manhattan precincts in the past few weeks. New captain in the 17th had been the #2 in Brooklyn’s 71st Pct.

A veteran Capitan of Brooklyn’s 71st Pct. is the new commanding officer of the 17th Pct. on the East Side of Manhattan.

The much decorated Captain Maggie Clamp had been the executive officer, which is the second highest ranking post in the precinct command, in the 71st in Brooklyn. She racked up 15 NYPD awards during her 17 year career which included stops at the 76th in Brooklyn as well as the 6th Precinct in Greenwich Village. She replaces replaced 19 year NYPD veteran, deputy inspector Aaron Edwards who moved across town to takeover the mid-town South precinct which covers portions of Chelsea, Hells Kitchen and Times Square.

The 17th is reporting mixed results on the crime front so far this year. Through the first four months, compStat figures show the number of criminal incidents reported to cops were up 9.7 percent to 372 through April 30 compared to the same period a year earlier.

The biggest surge in crime involved stolen autos. There were 17 vehicles swiped from the streets in the 17th which includes Sutton Area, Beekman Place, Kipps Bay, Turtle Bay, Murray Hill, and the Rose Hill neighborhoods. Last year, there were only 11. Grand larceny in general, which means the property was valued at over $1,000 was up 22.1 percent to 243 incidents in the first four months. On the other hand, burglaries were down 29.2 percent to 46 incidents in the first four months compared to a year ago and felonious assaults' dropped 7.5 percent to 37 incidents in the first four months of the year.

Auto thefts were a far bigger problem in Clamp’s former precinct in Brooklyn, where there were 33 vehicle thefts in the first four months of the year which was actually down 32.7 percent from the 49 grand larceny auto (GLA) reported in the same period a year ago.

And the number of reported crime incidents in the 71st for the seven major categories tracked by compStat dropped 11.7 percent to 348 incidents, compared to 394 in the year earlier.
