DEVIL'S CHEESECAKE
Seeing Junior's famous orange sign light up anywhere but Flatbush Avenue would be as obscene as seeing some overwrought high rise disrupt Brooklyn's quiet skyline. So, in keeping with recent developments, Junior's will be opening up a new branch in the middle of Times Square, joining such other legendary New York institutions as the Disney Store and the WWE Cafe. Mayor Bloomberg, champion of all things New, will be on hand for the grand opening next Monday, along with Brooklyn and Manhattan borough presidents Marty Markowitz and Scott Stringer. With the iconic cheesecake available somewhere else, Brooklynites should at least take solace in knowing they can have the original restaurant to themselves. The new Junior's may find keeping Manhattan's attention a little more difficult. They'll have to contend with plenty of other cheesecake purveyors, including D'Aiuto Bakery, which announced its "Miss New York, New York Cheesecake" contest last week. Interested ladies should send letters to the bakery at 405 8th Ave., or misscheesecake@spreadpr.net, explaining how they embody cheesecake ideals-which include kindness, generosity, and the ultimate cheesecake ideal, a picture of herself in a bathing suit. The winning gal gets a restaurant-size cake and $1,000.
