    Just asking?

Which leading 2008 presidential candidate, whose political career was aided by his wealthy father-in-law, is now carrying on all but openly behind his lovely wife's back?

    Method to the madness?

Movie actors who live in the city often tell reporters that they like acting in Broadway plays because it means they can work and go to bed in their own home at night. One problem: It also means locals can see their behavior. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf star Kathleen Turner has long maintained she wasn't a boozehound-at least not any longer.

We hear, though, that she may have been channeling her thirsty stage character after performances. Associates of Dope Peddler reportedly caught one of Ms. Turner's post-performance performances not long ago. At a bit past 11 p.m. on a recent Saturday, Turner turned up at Fiorello's across from Lincoln Center. By herself. Sitting down at the bar, she rapidly downed several big drink glasses and by midnight was giving the few remaining male patrons a predatory examination. Where was her husband, real estate developer and Happy Land Fire club owner Jay Weiss?

Is there a bit too much method in Ms. Turner's acting?

    Overheard...

Bitter pretty boy politico Giff Miller informed a Dope Peddler spy on Election Night that while Bloomberg had bought a victory that "his second term will be worse than his first."

Not the pay but the perks?

Although they're low-paid, being an assistant editor in publishing is supposed to be fun. But that's not always so at Penguin, we hear. Dope Peddler was told last week that junior assistants were being treated so haughtily that for a while senior execs weren't even permitting them business cards.

But wasn't it a thrill to work with the firm's legendary authors?

"Please," one assistant answered us. "Take [Nobel Prize Winner] Nadine Gordimer. I can't even read her books now. What a witch! She announced at dinner one night that the designer of one of her book's covers must not be able to read. When she was told the designer was at the table, she didn't apologize, went on insulting him and referred to him as though he weren't there."
