Julie Menin, UES City Council Member, Receives Disturbing Death Threat
The District 5 Democratic rep uploaded a photo of a letter to X.com–postmarked on October 5–that she said was “pages long w/horrific graphic sexual violence too shocking too post.” The page she did decide to post simply proclaimed: “F**k you Julie Menin I Will Kill You!” Her office alerted the NYPD, which is investigating the threat.
Julie Menin, the City Council Member for the UES’s District 5, said she received a death threat via an October 5 letter to her office.
Menin added that the letter–which read, in part, “F**k You Julie Menin I Will Kill You!”–was postmarked “10/5.” (She uploaded a page of it to X.com, formerly known as Twitter).
She said the post mark indicated it would have been composed and mailed before the Islamist militant group Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, leading to spiraling tensions between NYC’s Palestinian and Jewish communities. She has not speculated what motive may have driven the letter. Since the NYPD has yet to apprehend or identity a suspect, it appears that they do not currently know either.
Reached for comment by Straus News, Menin confirmed that “the police are actively investigating the incident.”
The politician added that she was unwilling to share additional material from the letter, considering that it contained “horrific graphic sexual violence too shocking to post.” She also firmly pronounced her thoughts on the unnerving ordeal: “Being a public official is not a license to harass and threaten us and I won’t stand for it.”
Adrienne Adams, the speaker of the City Council, noted her solidarity with Menin in a post of her own. “These attacks and harassment are completely reprehensible. All of us deserve to feel safe,” she said.
