The Pope in NY: How to Get Around

Thinking of visiting a friend upstate? Now would be a good time.

Pope Francis’ visit to the city, combined with the United Nations General Assembly, a stop-over by President Obama and a free Beyonce concert in Central Park have combined to create one of the busiest few days in the city’s recent history.

And with that comes gridlock.

See details below for what you should expect:

Thursday

From midnight to 9pm:

o 50th and 51st streets between Madison Avenue and Fifth Avenue

o From 3am-6am:

o Fifth Avenue between 47th Street to 55th Street

o 48th street to 55th streets between Madison Avenue and Sixth Avenue

From 6am-10am, all of those streets will open back up, except

o 50th and 51st streets between Madison Avenue and Fifth Avenue

o 72nd street between Madison and Fifth Avenues (near the Papal Nuncio’s residence) closes at 8am, will not open again until Saturday.

From 10am-9pm, once again

o Fifth Avenue between 47th Street to 55th Street

o 48th street to 55th streets between Madison Avenue and Sixth Avenue

o 72nd street between Madison and Fifth Avenues (near the Papal Nuncio’s residence)

From 2pm-9pm, all streets mentions above AND

o Madison Avenue between 47th and 57th Streets

o 71st Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues closes at 3pm will not open again until Saturday

From 10pm until 6am Friday -71st to 73rd Streets between Park and 5th Avenues

o Madison Avenue from 70th to 73rd streets

o Streets the Police will close intermittently (aka, at a moment’s notice, to keep us all on our toes)

o FRD Drive going northbound from South Ferry and/or going southbound from 63rd street

o Fifth Ave between 71st and 74th street

o 70th street between Park and Fifth Avenues

o 71st and 72nd streets between Park and Madison Avenues

o 73rd Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues

o The two most western lanes on Madison Avenue between 69th and 73rd streets

Friday

From 12am until time listed:

o Liberty and Cedar Streets between Trinity Place and Greenwich Street (until 1pm) -112th Street between Second and Third Avenues (until 6pm) -113th Street Cul-de-Sac (until 6pm)

o Central Park West between Columbus Circle and W 81st Street (until 7pm)

o West 61st to West 77th Streets between Central Park West and Broadway (until 7pm)

o 31st street between Seventh and Ninth Avenues (until midnight Saturday)

o 33rd street between Seventh and Ninth Avenues (until midnight Saturday)

From 5am until the UN General Assembly is no longer in session

o First Avenue between 42nd and 48th streets, except the tunnel underpass from 41st Street to 48th Street will be open to passenger (non-trucks) vehicles.

o 43rd to 46th streets between First and Second Avenues

o 42nd Street between FDR Drive and Second Avenue

o 42nd Street Exit and entrance ramps on the FDR Drive

From 11am-1pm:

o Northbound on West Street between Battery Place and Murray Street

Streets the will have intermittent closures, starting at noon:

o 31st Streets to 33rd Streets from Sixth to Seventh Avenues (managed access)

o Seventh Avenue between 30th Street to 34th Street

o Eighth Avenue between 31st and 33rd Streets

Saturday:

o Southbound at 63rd Street

o Northbound at South Ferry
