Man Indicted for Allegedly Attacking 70-Year-Old Woman in East Side Subway Station
The suspect allegedly pushed a 70-year-old woman onto the subway tracks at the 53rd Street and Lexington Avenue subway station in mid-May.

A Bronx man was indicted for allegedly pushing a 70-year-old woman to the ground in an unprovoked attack that prosecutors said happened at the Lexington Ave/53rd St. station.
Sherlock Arana, 37, is charged with two counts of assault for the May 12 shoving incident that happened around 10:30 in the morning.
Prosecsutors said that the victim was walking in the passageway at the East 53rd Street and Lexington Avenue station, traveling from the E train to the 6 train platform. Arana, who was also walking in the passageway, approached the victim, pushing her to the ground, unprovoked. As the victim fell, she hit her head against a nearby wall, suffering pain in her head, neck, and shoulders. She was eventually transported to a hospital for treatment.
After fleeing the scene, he was arrested two days later when police officers identified him from a wanted flyer. Arana was reportedly still wearing the same clothing seen during the attack.
“As alleged, Sherlock Arana assaulted a complete stranger in an unprovoked attack against an older New Yorker,” said District Attorney Bragg. “New Yorkers deserve to be safe navigating our subway stations and we will not stand for this kind of harmful conduct. We treat all random acts of violence committed in Manhattan with the seriousness they deserve, and we are working closely with our law enforcement partners to seek accountability in these cases.”
Even on the upper east side, there have been disturbing attacks on the subways. Recently, a 73-year-old woman was pummeled on an E train near Fifth Avenue in what police described as a random assault. In another incident, various MTA workers were attacked when cleaning a train when a passenger missed a shuttle.
According to court records, Arana’s criminal history includes one felony and nine misdemeanor convictions. Bail has been set at $45,000 cash or a $90,000 partially secured bond. Bradley Foster of Legal Aid is representing Arana. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 8.
