New Year's Eve Guide

| 17 Feb 2015 | 01:51

TOP CHOICES While compiling the 2004-2005 New Year's Eve Guide, some parties stood out from the rest. What attracted me is that they seem like the kind of events that could be held on any other Friday night of the year; they don't seem thrown together just to keep the cash registers chiming joyously.

Setting up New Year's Eve plans is hard work. And not the "I love my job being a Playboy photographer" kind of hard work. It's more like digging ditches. Getting your friends to agree on one place is difficult enough; if the party sucks, you're the one who gets the complaints. Maybe we can help.

ALMA's NYE White Party at Sullivan Room The Brazilian tradition of dressing in all white, gathering at the beach and throwing flowers into the sea seems like one I can get down with. Here, we can only pretend that the weather is tropical. Come here for two-for-one caipirinhas, ass-shaking with Miller Cruz (of Bembe) and DJ True's neo-Brazilian fusion (with some live percussion to spice it up). Stick around for the after-hours party starting at 3 a.m., quality house beats spun by the 112 Crew joined by Alex Pearce. Sullivan Room, 218 Sullivan St. (betw. W. 3rd & Bleecker Sts.), 212-505-1703, $25.

Knitting Factory Tap Bar pres. Brazilian Girls, James + Justin, aka Cocoa Cracker Brown There are no Brazilians in the group. The band's name has more to do with sexiness than the style or sound (international, electronic speakeasy beats). This is a great option for those in the mood for a live set from a group of emerging musicians in their prime, ready to jam and improvise into the early hours of 2005. Afterward, consider heading to Nublu, where all these musicians are residents, and will probably join forces for an even longer jam session (open until 9). Knitting Factory Tap Bar, 74 Leonard St. (betw. B'way & Church St.), 212-219-3006, 8, $20.

Table 50 Old-school MC, D-Nice, best known as DJ Scott LaRock's replacement in Boogie Down Production, will be manning the tables at this cool-as-shit lounge/restaurant. For the dinner crowd, enjoy an all-out gourmet meal and top-shelf open bar while bobbing your head to the beats. Table 50 knows how to throw an event, and I'm sure D-Nice won't disappoint. Table 50, 643 B'way (Bleecker St.), 212-253-2560; 10, $175.

Lyricist Lounge at Joe's Pub On the topic of hiphop, Evil Dee, DJ Trauma and Lord Sear spin the authentic underground tracks that will keep you on the dance floor. Everyone knows that Joe's Pub can be a bit pricey, so drink up and consider the four-hour open bar a bargain. Also, considering the lack of events pushing the "boom-bip," this is the jam for you. Joe's Pub, 425 Lafayette St. (betw. E. 4th St. & Astor Pl.), 212-539-8778; 10:30, $85-$100.
