NY POST INVITES ASIAN ANGER
Dissidents here in the States used Chinese President Hu Jintao's recent visit as an opportunity to protest the nation's repressive government and rampant human rights violations. No one seized the moment more dramatically than former researcher at Mt. Sinai Hospital turned full-time Falun Gong activist Wenyi Wang from Flushing, Queens. Wang skipped the usual torture-reenactment flyers in favor of shouting at President Hu directly during last Thursday's White House ceremony, where she was quickly arrested. On Saturday authorities announced that Wang's charges had been bumped up from disorderly conduct to a federal charge of harassing, intimidating and threatening a foreign official. She now faces six months in prison. Right on cue The New York Post followed up with a cover featuring a picture of President Bush tugging Hu's sleeve, and the headline, "Wok This Way." The food-court pun didn't sit well with some, including the Asian American Legal Defense & Education Fund, and the Asian American Journalists Association. Now they want an apology-something the Post isn't famous for doling out liberally.
