After a collision with a car, a taxi driver lost the control of his cab and smashed into the front of a Duane Reade drugstore on Third Ave. Two people on the scene suffered minor injuries.

The incident occurred at 711 Third Ave. on June 2 around 3pm. The pedestrians were not seriously injured and did not require transport to the hospital.

And the drugstore, though damaged by the crash, remained open, which has to be a bit of good fortune in the borough that has seen a rash of drugstore closings in recent months.

According to the preliminary investigation, the taxi, which was being driven by a 70-year-old male, was in collision with a Hyundai Santa Fe operated by a 39-year-old man. The impact caused the taxi to veer off course and crash directly into the front of the drugstore. Fortunately, despite the dramatic nature of the crash, there were no major injuries or significant structural damages reported.

When the authorities arrived, they observed the cab partially embedded in the building’s glass window. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were also present on the scene. Two civilians sustained minor injuries, but both refused medical assistance offered by EMS. The area was immediately cordoned off by police to ensure public safety, especially due to the presence of shattered glass and debris on the sidewalk.

A tow truck was called in to remove both vehicles. The yellow cab was carefully extracted from the storefront, and the Hyundai Santa Fe was also towed away to clear the roadway. The drugstore’s front window had to be dismantled, but beyond that, the business remained operational, serving customers during the cleanup process.

It is still unclear whether the collision was due to human error, a mechanical issue, or other contributing factors. As of June 3, no arrests were made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
