Who's Afraid of Virginia Fields?

Though he prefers to work at night and remain anonymous, Mr. X stresses that it's not in a Ku Klux Klan kind of way. The man who's bought more than 20 websites in an attempt to stymie the mayoral candidacy of Virginia C. Fields goes out of his way to assure inquisitors that "it's not a racial thing."

"I just have real problems with Fields' performance as borough president," says the mysterious Mr. X., who uploads a swarm of anti-Fields rants at anybody trying to locate the official website of Virginia C. Fields for Mayor. "Nor am I a supporter of Bloomberg," he says. "I just want to blow holes in all pompous politicians."

Especially pompous politicians named Virginia C. Fields. Virginiafields.com, Virginiafields.org, Virginiafields.net-Mr. X has purchased these and 13 other domains (at $8 a pop) in an act of pre-emptive cyber warfare against the Democrat. Type in any of these addresses and you'll get a site maintained by Mr. X explaining why the candidate is "all mush all the time." Although unlikely to be a lethal blow to her campaign, the site also posts an account of Fields' no-show at the opening-day ceremonies of the Greenwich Village Little League. Then there are the more serious charges, especially regarding Fields' cozy relationships to certain real estate developers.

While Fields is Mr. X's primary target, he also has other Democrats in his sights, including websites under construction at GifMillerActionHero.com and Weinerschnitzel.com. Prior to the current primary, Mr. X's anonymous web-hosting skills were most famously on display at the popular RetireRudy.com, currently, and prematurely, defunct.

The official website of Virgina C. Fields, meanwhile, can be found at Newyorkersforfields.com. For updates on Mr. X's other spoof sites, check in at Virginiafields.net. Or any of about 19 others.
