A woman was found dead inside of a duffel bag in her Kips Bay apartment on the evening of March 14, police say. On Friday, March 15, a medical examiner officially ruled the death a homicide.

52 year-old Nadia Vitel had reportedly been discovered by her superintendent during a wellness check, which was requested by her family after they hadn’t heard from her in a few days. Upon arriving at the East 31 St. pad, police confirmed that Vitel’s body had been secreted away in her closet. EMS pronounced her dead soon thereafter.

Vitel had reportedly died due to blunt force trauma blows to her head, according to the M.E.’s office. Detectives are still investigating the circumstances of Vitel’s death, although they believe she was killed on March 13, the day before she was found. However, authorities say that they are looking into two people who entered her apartment multiple times, beginning on March 10. Vitel had apparently been in the process of moving into the pad. She completed the process on March 12, one day before her mysterious death.

A report in the The Daily News noted that a chunk of wall nearby Vitel’s body was significantly damaged, indicating a possible struggle.
