Tales from the Nadler roundtable on Medicaid cuts - Earlier this month Congressman Jerry Nadler joined with Protect Our Care to discuss GOP healthcare cuts. The local healthcare advocates and community leaders gathered at Nadler’s West Village District office for a roundtable discussion of “the devastating impact of the GOP’s recently passed healthcare cuts, which will strip coverage from millions of Americans and gut critical services across NY.” The bill they’re referring to has been dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill.”

Nadler said that he is “committed to doing everything I can to repeal this dangerous law and speaking out for all New Yorkers who will be impacted.” The bill includes at least $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid and Affordable Care Act (ACA). Seventeen million Americans will lose their health coverage, including children, new mothers, seniors and people with disabilities. Jose Gonzalez, Patient Access Representative at Mount Sinai Health System, works with “patients everyday who rely on the crucial services provided by Medicaid,” and said that the “bill will rip away their ability to get life-saving treatments, see a doctor, or afford medications in addition to overwhelming our hospitals and putting thousands of jobs at risk.”

Rebecca Antar, Director of The Legal Aid Society Health Law Unit, said that “This bill is a catastrophic rollback of decades of progress” and “targets the most vulnerable of New Yorkers who rely on Medicaid coverage just to survive.”

CORRECTION: Due to an editing error, the subhead in the original version of this story said John Finley Walk was named after a firefighter who died on 9/11. This is incorrect. It was named in 1941 for John Finley who was a former president of City College and later the State University of New York. He enjoyed walking the perimeter of Manhattan as noted above in the corrected version.

Also, the original version of the story neglected to mention Borough President Mark Levine as one of the many political and community leaders behind the annual 9/11 memorial service.
