New Footage of Deadly East 96th Street Shoot-out Released by NYPD

The NYPD has released new footage of a Nov. 13 shoot-out on East 96th Street that left 20-year-old gunman Elijah Brown dead.

The CCTV footage provides a more detailed look at what led up to the incident, which involved Elijah Brown reportedly threatening various people in the area with a firearm, leading to a 911 call and a police pursuit.

Brown turned around and fired a shot at officers at around 7:07 p.m., police say, leading them to fire 20 rounds back at him. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

The footage demonstrates that Brown pulled a gun on a seemingly unarmed man in an elevator roughly 20 minutes before the shooting, which CBS News points out occurred roughly 10 blocks south. He then departed the elevator on the first floor, leaving the man unharmed.

Brown then entered a deli on East 107th Street, the footage shows, where he went behind the counter and pulled a gun on the clerk. He asked the clerk to call 911 on him, and talked to the operator himself.

“I’m crazy. I have a gun,” he says to the operator in the footage. “Someone was trying to kill me and I got away because I’m crazy.” He then told the operator he was going to the nearby Mount Sinai Hospital.

Footage confirms that Brown made it to the hospital’s emergency room, on Madison Avenue and 101st Street, where he stashed a gun in a flowerpot outside the entrance.

He then began talking to an off-duty security guard, who asked him to leave with him, and ran back inside when he noticed Brown retrieve the firearm from its stash spot. The off-duty security guard then called for backup.

The final piece of footage depicts the shooting, which proceeded after officers encountered Brown.
